This is why I don’t copy…

It has become a habit and a very well rumor in circulation that there is copying/cheating in the official exams, while this is not valid in some centers, and very outrageous in others, the media remains however blackened by that fact, which means that someone is covering up pretty well the traces.
This article’s main reason is to expose such trespasses and display the consequence of such acts and how it is affecting not only the people that are cheating but the other and even the country.

Rust

At a certain date and after a month of studies, the Lebanese students gather to do their official exams, and while doing the exam it is very common that we see different levels of “easiness” by the surveying teachers.
The first level is of course not tolerating any breath whatsoever, while this is rare, there are still some honest teachers that do so and do not let cheating, that however is variable and might be changed from an order given from the top, basically by a student with
high profile contacts.
The second level, is tolerating light cheating, that is small chatter, or turning and looking at others papers that sometime is manageable but tend to annoy some people however the level of annoyance is not that high, the chatter might cause a bit of focus loss.
The third level, is well tolerating cheating in all forms, basically this comes when there is a couple of students in the room that have high-profile contacts with the people in charge in the center or in the country. This type includes passing answer papers to some students, allowing of heavy chatter (yelling, screaming etc…) and movement in the room, or sometimes allow two people to solve the exam or they let people show off what they have of small papers to copy over (and sometimes books).
In whatsoever type of cheating the dogma and code are the same, hide everything when the supervisor comes since if a student is caught the repercussions are big on the student and the teacher in the room. And sometimes the supervisor is as corrupted as the teachers, but that doesn’t matter he must not see anything so that the state can say there was no cheating.
So why is there any tolerance?

A still unjustifiable reason

The reasons behind this could be that they are helping the student, like it would be very sad if he fails, like “poor him we do not want him to lose a year of his life”, well the answer to this is very simple, if he studied as did the rest of the students, he passes (very simple rule).
The main reason that this works is because our country still works on the same concept, if you have contacts you can succeed in everything, you do not need any skill whatsoever.

Primary Repercussions

While this very much is convenient for the people that didn’t study it is a bit unjust when it comes to the people that actually studied and did a hard work in the month given, so it becomes very unjust to separate between those who deserve to pass or deserve an excellence. The results become then not credible downgrading the esteem of our own education program in the eyes of other countries and universities. That does not suit us or our country, for Lebanese take pride in their mastery of the languages, education and culture.

Secondary Ricochets

In another scope, a Lebanese student is getting used to corruption, and the circulating rumors that he doesn’t need to study, so we are injecting corruption into the souls of students and that means that in their future they would rely on that rather on their own skills. Furthermore, passing students that shouldn’t have passed (and also students getting excellences while they shouldn’t) deny other students of their opportunities to go into universities or later on work.
This results in extreme measures taken by the corrector, that include very strict correction, and sometimes really unjust. Not to mention that some people correcting do it for the money and just neglect some other copies or stuff that they cant understand or that are put in another way. While this does not seem a right way to correct it, it becomes unfair to the people who studied or that can barely pass with what they know or those who did not copy.

Starting to purge

The fix should be on two levels, on one hand, they should put more responsible teachers to watch and exercise more control on the rooms. While this is very hard to do, considering that we are country built on corruption and exceptions, this just makes things tougher and strengthen furthermore the corruption that goes in our country from the snake’s head to the simple pawns.
On the other hand, the correctors should be more skilled and patient to see all methods, for there are numerous roads that lead to the answer, not just one.
Correction should be well taken into account even if it does mean delaying the results.
